hmmm well the first thing i suggest is to NOT use flash >.< i really really hate the way that pictures turn out with that effect on.

make sure the lighting IS good though, you usually want the sun to the side or back, lighting the subject.

make sure the shot is focused. with a digital camera, no problem. auto. but with some film, you have to focus yourself.

lastly, make sure the picture is interesting. your brother standing in front of the statue of liberty is a good picture for you to have. its a good tourist picture. but something where the subject is doing something, even if it is posing is much better than just a stand and smile with a background
